Common Reasons for Leather Cleaning, Conditioning and Protection

Tuft and Weave professional leather cleaning and protection service is designed to maintain the natural character of your leather while extending its life and beauty. Our trained technicians use advanced, pH-balanced products and refined techniques tailored to each leather type, ensuring complete safety and lasting results.

Over time, leather furniture tells a quiet story, one of everyday life, warmth, and use. But without proper care, the same qualities that make leather beautiful can also make it vulnerable. Natural oils, perspiration, and environmental exposure can gradually lead to dryness, cracking, or fading. At Tuft & Weave, we understand that each piece, whether in a home, hotel, or commercial space, deserves expert attention to preserve its comfort, elegance, and integrity.

Regular Professional Care Helps To

  • Refresh and Revive Your Leather – Our technicians gently remove damaging soil caused by skin and fur oils, perspiration, and embedded dirt, restoring softness, freshness, and natural lustre.
  • Protect Against Everyday Wear – Incorrect cleaning or generic products, such as baby or alcohol wipes and dishwashing soap, can weaken finishes and strip colour. Our process ensures each leather type, from aniline to pigmented, is treated with the care it requires and deserves.
  • Nourish and Keep It Supple for Years to Come – Consistent cleaning and conditioning maintain the right moisture balance, preventing the fibres from drying, stiffening, or cracking.
  • Maintain Natural Beauty and Lustre – Professional protection treatments maintain your leather’s patina and sheen, keeping its colour rich and the surface smooth so your furnishings continue to look refined and inviting.

Common concerns we treat include:

  • Stains – Regular cleaning and protection prevent oils and dirt from bonding to the leather’s finish or being absorbed into the leather.
  • Discolouration – Our cleaning process removes grime build-up and restores natural colour vibrancy before permanent etching occurs.
  • Cracking – Conditioning nourishes the fibres to maintain flexibility and prevent drying or splitting.
  • Fading – Protective coatings help shield against UV exposure, preserving both colour and finish.

Whether it’s a statement sofa in a private residence or a suite of furnishings in a commercial setting, our expert care keeps your leather looking exquisite, feeling supple, and performing beautifully for years to come.

When leather becomes overly worn, it may benefit from our Leather Restoration Service to renew its colour, texture, and protective finish.

What Type Of Leather Do You Have

There are several different varieties of leather available on the market, each of which has its own characteristics. Because each leather is unique, different products and cleaning methods are needed to care for each leather type and prolong its life.

Leather types

Types of Leather Explained

Pigmented or protected leather is the most durable and low maintenance of all the leather types.

A layer of coloured pigment is applied to the surface of the leather to give it a vibrant and uniform appearance. A clear protective topcoat is applied over the pigment.

This type of leather requires regular cleaning and conditioning (moisturising) to remove abrasive dust and clean any build-up of body oil, sweat and general dirt to prevent permanent damage to the leather.

We recommend: You can clean Pigmented leather yourself every 3–6 months, but you should have it professionally cleaned every 6–12 months.

Aniline is the purest form of leather and is made from quality hides. It’s a full-grain leather that has been dyed, but not pigmented or protected.

Aniline can fade easily. And because it has no protective topcoat, it can absorb stains and spillages quickly – especially body and head oils.

We recommend: You should have your Aniline leather protected before use and ensure it is professionally cleaned, conditioned (moisturised) and protected every 6–12 months to maintain its natural beauty and prolong its life.

Like Aniline, Semi-aniline is a full-grain leather with a fine layer of pigment and an even colour. It sometimes has a light coating that gives it protection.

Semi-aniline leather feels soft and warm to the touch, and will be smooth-looking, sometimes with natural scars visible.

While not as absorbent as Aniline, Semi-aniline leather may absorb spillages after a short time, which will leave the area of spillage darker.

We recommend: You should ensure your Semi-aniline leather is professionally cleaned, conditioned (moisturised) and protected every 6–12 months to maintain its natural beauty and prolong its life.

Nubuck is the softest and most expensive of all the leathers. It will have a ‘nap’ on the surface that is velvety to the touch and will change the shade of the leather if you run your hand across it in different directions.

Being a natural Aniline leather and buffed, Nubuck is very soft. However, it’s also very absorbent,  which makes it susceptible to staining and difficult to maintain.

Suede leather has similar characteristics to Nubuck leather, but it is made from the flesh side of the leather, not the top grain.

We recommend: You should ensure that Nubuck and suede leather is professionally protected before use and that you have your furniture professionally cleaned and protected on a regular basis.

Made from high-quality hides, Pull-Up leather is an Aniline leather that has been treated with an oil or wax finish. It is designed to develop a distressed look over time.

Due to the protection provided by the layer of wax or oil, Pull-Up leather is more durable than pure Aniline leather.

We recommend: You should have Pull-Up leather professionally cleaned on a regular basis every 6-12 months to revitalise the wax or oil finish.

Your Questions Answered

Every 12–18 months for homes, every 6 months for high-use commercial areas.

No. All products are finish-safe and tested on an inconspicuous area first.

Yes. We specialise in delicate and aged leathers, preserving texture and patina.

In short, clean, condition and apply protector regularly.

Finished leather, such as pigmented leather and semi-aniline leather, features a clear topcoat applied to protect the finish and the leather. Once the clear topcoat wears off (faster for semi-aniline leather), the finish’s pigments become exposed. Body oils, sweat, general soiling and environmental conditions cause the finish to dry and eventually crack. If left unaddressed, eventually it affects the leather itself. To prolong the lifespan of your finished leather sofa or armchair, you need to clean and condition (rehydrate) the leather and apply a protector regularly.

Unfinished leather, such as nubuck leather and aniline leather, is more delicate as the leather doesn’t have the finish or topcoat to protect it. Therefore, it is more susceptible to staining and absorbing body oil and sweat. Tuft & Weave recommends that unfinished leather be protected before use to offer the leather longevity. A rigorous care routine is essential to ensure the leather is well-maintained. You need to clean, condition (rehydrate) and protect the leather regularly.

  • Keep your leather couch or leather armchair away from direct sunlight to prevent drying and sun fading.
  • Keep your leather furniture away from heaters and fireplaces to prevent drying out the leather
  • Most importantly, you need to clean, condition (rehydrate), and protect your leather furniture yourself every three to four months and get it serviced professionally by a reputable company once a year.
  • Leather needs to remain in an acidic state. Ideally between 4.5pH and 5.5pH. Body oil, sweat, medication and using the wrong cleaners can raise the pH and damage the leather over time. Therefore, you need to clean the leather regularly and ensure the right leather cleaner and conditioner are used to care for your leather.
  • Unfinished leathers, such as nubuck and aniline, as well as pull-up leathers, require cleaning with specialised products. You must not use regular leather cleaners and conditioners, which are designed for use with finished leather furniture, such as pigmented leather.
