If you’re one of the 20% of Australians who suffer from allergies, you’ll understand how miserable they can make you feel.

Ridding your home of dust mites and the detritus they leave behind can be a major step towards creating an allergen-free home.

Pet dander, pollen and mould can all cause an allergic reaction, but dust mites are the most common source of allergen found in the home. Dust mites may be invisible to the eye, but they can leave millions of microscopic contaminants (specifically, their faecal matter) in your mattress and pillows. When their residue becomes airborne, the small particles are inhaled and can trigger severe allergic reactions such as asthma, bronchitis and eczema.

While microscopic dust mites can be found throughout the house, they flourish and multiple rapidly in warm, humid environments such as bedding.

Reduce dust mite allergies

Tuft & Weave uses the Responsible Care System® as an effective and safe way to control dust mite allergens in mattresses, upholstery, rugs and carpet. The system uses solutions derived from renewable plant source surfactants.

The final step in the Responsible Care System® process is applying Allergy Relief Treatment, which provides a residual effect for up to six months. Allergy Relief Treatment is an aqueous solution containing a powerful active ingredient derived from naturally occurring extracts found in certain fruit seeds and plants. This remarkable treatment changes the shape of allergen proteins, so the body no longer recognises them, thus alleviating the body’s allergic response.

How to get rid of dust mites

Dust mites can be found throughout the home, but they proliferate in warm, humid environments like that found in our mattresses. We spend more time in our beds than anywhere else, during which time we sweat and shed dead skin. Dust mites feed on dead skin, which is made edible by moisture trapped in the air.

Dust mites are particularly fond of the warm and humid conditions that Sydney and its suburbs can experience during the warmer months. But they can also thrive during the winter months because we keep our windows and doors shut and reduce natural ventilation entering the house.

Aside from booking a professional Tuft & Weave clean and treatment to control dust mite populations, it’s good practice to manage the temperature and humidity of your indoor areas to prevent the warm, humid conditions that dust mites love to live in. Try to give your home plenty of good ventilation, vacuum your mattresses as regularly as you might vacuum your carpets and also regularly wash your bedding in very hot water.
