Cracked leather restoration

Common Reasons for Leather Cleaning, Conditioning and Protection

Leather furniture can face several common issues over time. If the leather is too worn, it may need a full restoration service. A preventative maintenance program for your domestic or commercial leather furniture prolongs the life of your cherished leather furniture and avoids problems such as:

  • Stains: Regular cleaning and protection of your leather furniture prevent dirt from etching into the leather finish or being permanently absorbed by the leather.
  • Discolouration: Our treatments remove grime and build-up, restoring colour vibrancy before the dirt etches itself into the leather finish or becomes permanently absorbed.
  • Cracking: Conditioning treatments help prevent cracking by maintaining moisture levels.
  • Fading: Using protective finishes, we help shield against UV damage and fading.

each leather is unique, different products and cleaning methods are needed to care for each leather type and prolong its
life.

Leather types

Types of Leather Explained

Pigmented or protected leather is the most durable and low-maintenance type of leather. A layer of coloured pigment is applied to the surface of the leather to give it a vibrant and uniform appearance. A clear protective topcoat is applied over the pigment. This type of leather requires regular cleaning and conditioning (moisturising) to remove abrasive dust and clean any buildup of body oil, sweat, and general dirt, preventing permanent damage to the leather.

We recommend: You can clean Pigmented leather yourself every 3–6 months, but you should have it professionally cleaned every 6–12 months. Contact us to learn more about our leather cleaning and protection services.

Aniline is the purest form of leather, made from high-quality hides. It’s a full-grain leather that has been dyed, but not pigmented or protected. Aniline can fade easily. And because it has no protective topcoat, it can absorb stains and spillages quickly, especially body and head oils.

We recommend: You should have your Aniline leather protected before use and ensure it is professionally cleaned, conditioned (moisturised) and protected every 6–12 months to maintain its natural beauty and prolong its life. Call us to find out about protecting your new aniline leather furniture.

Like Aniline, Semi-aniline is a full-grain leather with a fine layer of pigment and an even colour. It sometimes has a light coating that gives it protection. Semi-aniline leather feels soft and warm to the touch, and will be smooth-looking, sometimes with natural scars visible. While not as absorbent as Aniline, Semi-aniline leather may absorb spillages after a short time, which will leave the area of spillage darker.

We recommend: You should ensure your Semi-aniline leather is professionally cleaned, conditioned (moisturised) and protected every 6–12 months to maintain its natural beauty and prolong its life. Contact us to learn about protecting your new semi-aniline leather furniture.

Nubuck is the softest and most expensive type of leather. It will have a ‘nap’ on the surface that is velvety to the touch and will change the shade of the leather if you run your hand across it in different directions. Being a natural Aniline leather and buffed, Nubuck is very soft. However, it’s also very absorbent, which makes it susceptible to staining and challenging to clean and maintain.

Suede leather has similar characteristics to Nubuck leather, but it is made from the flesh side of the leather, not the top grain. We recommend: Ensure that Nubuck and suede leather are professionally protected before use, and have your furniture professionally cleaned and protected regularly. Call us to learn more about protecting your new nubuck and suede leather furniture.

Made from high-quality hides, Pull-Up leather is an Aniline leather that has been treated with an oil or wax finish. It is designed to develop a distressed look over time. Due to the protection provided by the layer of wax or oil, Pull-Up leather is more durable than pure Aniline leather.

We recommend that you have Pull-Up leather professionally cleaned regularly, every 6-12 months, to revitalise the wax or oil finish.

Your Questions Answered

In short, clean, condition and apply protector regularly.

Finished leather, such as pigmented leather and semi-aniline leather, features a clear topcoat applied to protect the finish and the leather. Once the clear topcoat wears off (faster for semi-aniline leather), the finish’s pigments become exposed. Body oils, sweat, general soiling and environmental conditions cause the finish to dry and eventually crack. If left unaddressed, eventually it affects the leather itself. To prolong the lifespan of your finished leather sofa or armchair, you need to clean and condition (rehydrate) the leather and apply a protector regularly.

Unfinished leather, such as nubuck leather and aniline leather, is more delicate as the leather doesn’t have the finish or topcoat to protect it. Therefore, it is more susceptible to staining and absorbing body oil and sweat. Tuft & Weave recommends that unfinished leather be protected before use to offer the leather longevity. A rigorous care routine is essential to ensure the leather is well-maintained. You need to clean, condition (rehydrate) and protect the leather regularly.

  • Keep your leather couch or leather armchair away from direct sunlight to prevent drying and sun fading.
  • Keep your leather furniture away from heaters and fireplaces to prevent drying out the leather
  • Most importantly, you need to clean, condition (rehydrate), and protect your leather furniture yourself every three to four months and get it serviced professionally by a reputable company once a year.
  • Leather needs to remain in an acidic state. Ideally between 4.5pH and 5.5pH. Body oil, sweat, medication and using the wrong cleaners can raise the pH and damage the leather over time. Therefore, you need to clean the leather regularly and ensure the right leather cleaner and conditioner are used to care for your leather.
  • Unfinished leathers, such as nubuck and aniline, as well as pull-up leathers, require cleaning with specialised products. You must not use regular leather cleaners and conditioners, which are designed for use with finished leather furniture, such as pigmented leather.
