Our Leather Restoration Process

Cleaning

Dust, dirt, and oils accumulate on leather surfaces over time, dulling their appearance. We use specialised products to thoroughly clean and remove impurities without damaging the leather.

Icon

Repairing Cracks & Tears

After cleaning, our skilled technicians mend any cracks and tears with specialist techniques to make the repairs untraceable. This ensures that your furniture retains its structural integrity.

Icon

Recolouring

Once repairs are complete, we move to recolouring the leather. Our restorers use high-quality dyes to match the original colour, restoring your furniture's vibrant appearance.

Icon

Conditioning

Next, we apply essential conditioning treatment to maintain the suppleness of leather. The conditioner or moisturiser will nourish the leather and prevent it from drying and cracking in the future.

Protecting

Finally, a protective coating is applied to shield your leather from future damage. This layer acts as a barrier against spills and stains while enhancing the overall resilience of your leather.

What Type of Leather Do You Have?

There are several different varieties of leather available on the market, each of which has its own characteristics. Because each leather is unique, different methods and finishes are needed to repair and restore each leather type

Leather types

Types of Leather Explained

Pigmented or protected leather is the most durable and low maintenance of all the leather types.

A layer of coloured pigment is applied to the surface of the leather to give it a vibrant and uniform appearance. A clear protective topcoat is applied over the pigment.

This type of leather requires regular cleaning and conditioning (moisturising) to remove abrasive dust and clean any build-up of body oil, sweat and general dirt to prevent permanent damage to the leather.

We recommend: You can clean Pigmented leather yourself every 3–6 months, but you should have it professionally cleaned every 6–12 months.

Aniline is the purest form of leather and is made from quality hides. It’s a full-grain leather that has been dyed, but not pigmented or protected.

Aniline can fade easily. And because it has no protective topcoat, it can absorb stains and spillages quickly – especially body and head oils.

We recommend: You should have your Aniline leather protected before use and ensure it is professionally cleaned, conditioned (moisturised) and protected every 6–12 months to maintain its natural beauty and prolong its life.

Like Aniline, Semi-aniline is a full-grain leather with a fine layer of pigment and an even colour. It sometimes has a light coating that gives it protection.

Semi-aniline leather feels soft and warm to the touch, and will be smooth-looking, sometimes with natural scars visible.

While not as absorbent as Aniline, Semi-aniline leather may absorb spillages after a short time, which will leave the area of spillage darker.

We recommend: You should ensure your Semi-aniline leather is professionally cleaned, conditioned (moisturised) and protected every 6–12 months to maintain its natural beauty and prolong its life.

Nubuck is the softest and most expensive of all the leathers. It will have a ‘nap’ on the surface that is velvety to the touch and will change the shade of the leather if you run your hand across it in different directions.

Being a natural Aniline leather and buffed, Nubuck is very soft. However, it’s also very absorbent,  which makes it susceptible to staining and difficult to maintain.

Suede leather has similar characteristics to Nubuck leather, but it is made from the flesh side of the leather, not the top grain.

We recommend: You should ensure that Nubuck and suede leather is professionally protected before use and that you have your furniture professionally cleaned and protected on a regular basis.

Made from high-quality hides, Pull-Up leather is an Aniline leather that has been treated with an oil or wax finish. It is designed to develop a distressed look over time.

Due to the protection provided by the layer of wax or oil, Pull-Up leather is more durable than pure Aniline leather.

We recommend: You should have Pull-Up leather professionally cleaned on a regular basis every 6-12 months to revitalise the wax or oil finish.

Your Questions Answered

As one of Sydney’s most experienced providers of leather restoration services, we’re often asked about our process, colour options, and the types of leather we can repair.

We are a mobile business that services most of Metro Sydney and occasionally travel to regional NSW. We can complete most repairs on-site. For major repairs and recolouring projects, we do the work off-site.

In short, we can change the colour of your lounge to a different colour.

  • Pigmented leather is finished with an opaque pigment (similar to paint). We can change to any colour you desire, as the new colour will hide the existing one.
  • Unfinished leather, such as aniline and nubuck, is dyed with transparent dyes (similar to a wood stain). The dyes take on the existing colour; therefore, we can’t change the colour family, i.e. red to blue, and we can only go darker.
  • Unfinished leather can be turned into pigmented leather using opaque pigments. In this instance, we can change to any new colour you desire.
